Whitey Herzog, the Hall of Fame manager who led the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series championship, has died at the age of 92. The Cardinals announced his death on Saturday, April 16, 2024.

Herzog, born Dorrel Norman Elvert Herzog on November 9, 1931, played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball as an outfielder with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Mets before embarking on a successful managerial career.

He took over the Cardinals in 1980 and quickly turned the team into a contender. St. Louis won the World Series in 1982, and Herzog was named the National League Manager of the Year. The Cardinals also won the pennant in 1985 and 1987 under Herzog's leadership.

Herzog was known for his fiery personality and his ability to get the most out of his players. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Herzog's passing is a great loss for the baseball community. He was a true baseball legend, and his contributions to the game will never be forgotten.

The Cardinals will hold a memorial service for Herzog at Busch Stadium on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Whitey Herzog Scholarship Fund at the University of Missouri.

Rest in peace, Whitey.
